There are some names in Ghana’s entertainment history that can never be forgotten, and one of those names is Yaw Donkor, popularly known as Nkomode. His story is not just about laughter, but also a journey of rise, glory, struggle, and reality.
Nkomode was born in 1958 in Wassa Akropong. Like many great entertainers of his time, his journey into entertainment began in the church. He joined the Kristo Asafo Band, where he discovered and developed his natural talent for comedy and performance.
It was in Kristo Asafo that Ghana first began to notice his gift. He had a unique ability to make people laugh using simple language, real-life situations, and a strong stage presence that connected deeply with audiences.
His big breakthrough came in the late 1990s during the popular Key Soap Concert Party era, where he became one of the biggest stars on stage. His performances made him a household name across the country.
In 1996, Nkomode made history when he defeated the legendary Bob Okala to win the title “Champion of Champions.” Many thought it was a surprise, but he proved them wrong by defending the title again in 1997.
In 1998, he went on to defeat Agya Koo to win the title for the third time in a row. At that point, Nkomode had established himself as the undisputed king of Ghanaian comedy on stage.
At the peak of his fame, he travelled to the United Kingdom, living in cities such as London and Manchester. However, while he was away, rumors began to spread in Ghana that he had been jailed for drugs.
Years later, he returned home and clarified the situation, explaining that it was not a drug-related case but rather a visa issue. Despite the explanation, the rumors had already affected his public image.
In 2011, Nkomode returned to Ghana, encouraged by his friend Akrobeto. He tried to revive his career by joining the Kumawood movie industry, hoping to continue entertaining his fans.
However, things had changed in the industry. New actors had taken over, and the system was no longer the same as before. The transition became difficult for him, and he struggled to regain his former status.
With time, his health began to decline. He suffered from serious kidney, liver, and bladder complications.
His condition worsened gradually, and by 2015, he was bedridden and unable to continue working.
During his difficult moments, his close friend Akrobeto stood by him and supported him.
On February 5, 2016, Nkomode passed away at Ridge Hospital at the age of 58.
He left behind six children and a legacy that remains unforgettable in Ghana’s entertainment history. His impact on comedy and stage performance continues to be remembered by many.
Hmmm life is not always stable. Today you may be at the top, and tomorrow things can change. But what truly matters is the impact you leave behind.
Nkomode brought laughter, joy, and entertainment to many homes. He became a legend in Ghanaian comedy, and legends like him are never forgotten.
